I felt the full breadth and depth of the ocean around the sphere of the Earth, back billions of years to the beginning of life, across all the passing lives and deaths, the endless waves of swimming joy and quiet losses of exquisite creatures with fins and fronds, tentacles and wings, colourful and transparent, tiny and huge, coming and going. There is nothing the ocean has not seen Sally Andrew
About This Quote

When we think about the ocean, we usually think of the blue and the green and the sandy beaches and the sparkling waves and the crashing waves and the vastness of it all. But we never think about what was going on before all that. The world was once a whole, with nothing but water and clouds and stars. There were no people or animals or vegetation of any kind. It was just the ocean, which stretched across everything like a vast, endless blanket of water.

And then, one day, it rained. Water droplets started falling from everywhere, each one of them carrying life within itself. The raindrops that landed on land began to grow into tiny plants, which began to take root in the soil. Soon they had roots to hold them down, leaves to make their way through the muddy ground, branches to support their heads. As more rain fell, more plants formed in order to make their own way through this strange new world they found themselves in.

And little by little, every single thing living on earth today began to develop from this tiny drop of water that formed our world today. This is how it happened to us all: everyone alive today is descended from one little drop of water that fell into that perfect sea billions of years ago! And even though it's hard to believe sometimes when you look up at night sky with all those stars in it, there are billions upon billions of stars out there in the universe, each one just like our Earth in so many ways - whether you can see them or not!
